Sobering.

I was listening to a financial show on the radio today that was talking about how we have evolved into a global economy, how one nation's economy has a more direct effect on other nations' economies like never before.

As I was hearing this, I was struck with a thought. There really is no such thing as a global economy, only a bunch of individual economies. The global economy is really nothing more than the composite of individuals managing their own economies.

As for me, I have chosen to maintain a healthy debt to savings ratio. I live within my means, and as long as I do that, I should be fine. I will have to adjust based on what others may do, but within my own little financial bubble, I will survive.

I wonder how things would turn out if every person saw it that way.

I think that attitude, one of individual responsibility being the key to community well-being, is one that would be helpful to the world in all areas of life. All groups are made up of individuals, although they do influence each other. I am reminded of Ronnie James Dio talking about how he tries to surround himself with musicians who are better than he, as it causes him to do better himself. If each individual within a nation worked to better himself, then each nation would benefit and the neighboring and even distant nations would benefit as well.

Oh, and I think this attitude is one that can be used not just in economics but in all areas of one's life.

(Long-winded yup, I agree.)

It's basically a graph of how many dollars we have dumped into our system over the last hundred years or so. It looks like a hockey stick.

Thanks Elf. That's interesting, and probably the gospel truth too.

Dumping = printing new money

So we print up more money, and it seems we have more but really we just made each dollar worth less.

Yeah, that's a great way to fix the economy. NOT!
