Coulthard breaks Valencia lap record
11/27/2003

David Coulthard gave the strongest indication that the new McLaren chassis will be a contender right out of the box, smashing the lap record at Valencia on the third day of Formula One testing.

Coulthard turned a top lap of 1:10.021 in the new MP4-19, which made it track debut on Tuesday. However, the Scotsman downplayed the significance of the fast time which was 6-100ths of a second beter than the best time posted this week so far.

"Is it quick enough to win a grand prix? That's the question and we just won't know until we get to Melbourne and see what everyone else can do," said Coulthard.

Still, the results are a far cry from the MP4-18, which failed to complete a handful of laps on its maiden voyage and never saw the competitive light of day in 2003.

Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher continued their strong showing for BMW-Williams, posting the second and fourth fastest times respectively.

Jarno Trulli in the Renault found himself sandwitched between the Williams duo after completing a session high 109 laps.

Williams test driver Marc Gene posted the fifth fastest time. His car has been equipped with the 2004 BMW spec engine, which will have to last an entire Grand Prix weekend under next season's rules.

Franck Montagny in the Renault, Alexander Wurz in the McLaren and Ryan Briscoe in the Toyota were next quickest followed by the Jaguar duo of Justin Wilson and Mark Webber. This was Wilson's first time behind the wheel of the Jaguar since the season ended. He was marginally quicker than his teammate in what is likely his last opportunity to convince team brass he deserves to return next year.

Wurz, Montagny, Gene and Briscoe will be back on track Friday for wet-weather testing.

Over in Barcelona, Spain, Luca Badoer made it a clean sweep of the three day test session, clocking the fastest time for Ferrari.

Badoer's time of 1:17.300 was just 2-10ths of a second faster than Jenson Button in the BAR-Honda concept car. Giancarlo Fisichella was third fastest as he completed his first week wtih new team Sauber.

Felipe Massa was fourth fastest while fellow Ferrari test driver Luciano Burti was fifth but saw his session come to an end after just 16 laps following a crash while exiting the final corner. While the Brazilian escaped unharmed, the damage to the car was too much to be repaired and he was forced to sit out the remainder of the session.

Still, his time was better than Takuma Sato, who completed 92 more laps but finished 2-10ths of a second behind Burti.
